About John Bloundelle-Burton

John Bloundelle-Burton (1850-1917) was an English naval officer and gentleman journalist turned novelist, publishing his first book in 1885. He put his naval experience to good use in a series of nautical adventures, but it’s his historical swashbucklers that interest us, particularly In the Day of Adversity (1895), The Clash of Arms (1897), and The Scourge of God (1898), all set in France under Louis XIV. But if you’re going to read just one Bloundelle-Burton novel, it has to be The Hispaniola Plate (1895), a cracking good tale of piracy, mutiny, and treasure in the late 17th-century Caribbean.

Bloundelle-Burton lived and wrote in Paris for many years, and was an aficionado of French history: all his historical tales are well researched and his settings always ring true. Like Weyman and Levett-Yeats, he didn’t write very many short stories, preferring the novel, but it wasn’t because he couldn’t write a tight, compact tale when he wanted to—as you’ll see, in this story from Longman’s Christmas Annual of 1898.
